A multi-storey building of a blanket factory collapsed in Focal Point area near Jalandhar. The incident occurred at around 11. 30 pm on Sunday night, when scores of workers were busy in manufacturing blankets in the premises of Sheetal Fibers Limited.
Nearly 57 people have been rescued from the collapse site till mid-noon. Six people have died and several feared trapped under the debris of the collapsed building. A massive operation is underway to bring out others who are still trapped. More than 800 activists of Shah Satnam Ji Green ‘S’ Welfare Force Wing along with the army, the fire brigade and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been launched an operation to rescue the persons still trapped under the rubble. They are actively engaged in searching frantically for the victims.
Intermittent rain is hampering rescue operations at the accident site. Still efforts are being made to extricate the bodies from the wreckage with the same zeal.
The injured have been rushed to Devi Talab Charitable Hospital as well as the Civil Hospital, where the condition of some is said to be "critical."
The cause of the mishap is yet to be ascertained. Death toll is pegged at six officially. However, there is no confirmation yet on the exact number of people trapped.
