National Cancer Awareness Day: THINK Healthy, Live Healthy – A Vision for a Healthier Tomorrow
“Behind every cancer statistic is a human story, a life interrupted, a family challenged and a journey that calls for awareness, care and hope.”
Cancer is more than a medical diagnosis; it is a challenge that affects individuals, families and communities across the world. From the uncertainty of diagnosis to the physical and emotional demands of treatment, its impact extends far beyond the patient. Yet, greater awareness, healthier lifestyle choices, timely medical attention and access to appropriate treatment can make a meaningful difference.
Observed annually on 7 November, National Cancer Awareness Day in India highlights the importance of cancer prevention, early detection and timely treatment. It reminds us that awareness should not remain limited to information; it must inspire informed decisions and responsible action.
Cancer: Understanding the Global Challenge
The worldwide burden of cancer makes awareness and prevention increasingly important. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), approximately 20 million new cancer cases and 9.7 million cancer-related deaths were recorded globally in 2024. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that around 38% of cancers could be prevented through measures addressing established risk factors.
Tobacco use, alcohol consumption, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity and certain infections are among the recognised cancer risk factors. These realities underline the importance of prevention, appropriate screening, early diagnosis and access to quality healthcare.
THINK: A Vision for Healthier Living
“Prevention begins with the choices we make every day.”
Recognising the importance of healthy food choices and awareness about serious diseases, Revered Saint Dr. MSG Ji introduced the 167th Welfare Initiative – THINK.
THINK conveys the message:
T - Telling People to Eat
H - Healthy Food to
I - Increase
N - Natural Immunity against Many
K - Kinds of Cancer and Heart Diseases.
Through this initiative, Revered Saint Dr. MSG Ji encourages people to understand the value of nutritious food and adopt healthier eating habits. Its message places emphasis on making conscious food choices and recognising the importance of nutrition in supporting overall health.
This initiative provides a meaningful starting point for a wider conversation about healthier living and the everyday choices that contribute to well-being.
From Awareness to Action: The Guidance of Revered Saint Dr. MSG Ji
1. Make Healthy Food Choices
- Value the Role of Nutrition: The THINK initiative highlights the importance of healthy food in supporting the body’s natural immunity. Adequate nutrition helps maintain normal bodily functions and contributes to overall health.
- Make Health a Daily Priority: Rather than relying on occasional changes, individuals should develop consistent, healthier eating habits. Small improvements in everyday food choices can contribute to long-term well-being.
- Include Fruits and Vegetables: Fresh fruits and vegetables provide vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre. Including a variety of these foods in everyday meals is an important part of a balanced diet.
2. Adopt a Healthier Lifestyle
Revered Saint Dr. MSG Ji’s 162nd Welfare Initiative – Healthy Heart Campaign, introduced on 11 March 2024, also highlights the importance of healthier lifestyle choices.
- Remain Physically Active: Regular exercise and physical activity are important components of a healthy routine. Walking and other suitable activities can help individuals maintain fitness and support overall health.
- Stay Away from Harmful Substances: The campaign encourages people to abstain from smoking, alcohol and drugs. Avoiding tobacco and alcohol is particularly important because both are established cancer risk factors.
- Choose Healthy Daily Habits: A healthier lifestyle is built through consistent decisions. Nutritious food, regular physical activity and avoiding harmful substances can collectively contribute to better health.
3. Give Importance to Preventive Healthcare
- Pay Attention to Your Health: Being aware of changes in one’s body and not ignoring unusual or persistent symptoms are important aspects of responsible healthcare. Seeking medical advice when concerns arise can help prevent unnecessary delays.
- Understand the Importance of Screening: Appropriate cancer screening can help detect certain cancers before symptoms appear. Screening recommendations depend on factors such as age, medical history and individual risk.
- Seek Timely Medical Guidance: Consulting qualified healthcare professionals and following their advice is essential. Early diagnosis can improve the chances of successful treatment for many types of cancer.
4. Make Health Awareness a Collective Responsibility
- Educate Families: Awareness begins at home. Encouraging family members to adopt healthier eating habits, avoid harmful substances and seek timely medical advice can help create a more health-conscious environment.
- Share Reliable Information: Cancer-related misinformation can cause confusion and delay appropriate medical care. Sharing information from credible healthcare organisations helps people make informed decisions.
- Support People Living with Cancer: A cancer diagnosis can bring emotional and practical challenges for patients and their families. Compassion, encouragement and meaningful support can help them feel less alone during their journey.
Compassion Beyond Awareness: Standing Together
“Compassion can take many forms, from a blood donation to a health check-up, from prevention to standing beside someone in their hardest moments.”
Through humanitarian activities, Dera Sacha Sauda volunteers contribute to voluntary blood donation and other forms of assistance for people in need. Dera Sacha Sauda also regularly organises free medical camps, helping people, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds, access health check-ups and medical guidance that may otherwise be beyond their reach.
The DEPTH campaign, initiated by Saint Dr. Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Ji Insan, emphasises staying away from drugs, alcohol, smoking and other harmful habits. By following the campaign’s principles, individuals are encouraged to adopt a disciplined, healthier lifestyle and steer clear of behaviours that can increase the risk of serious diseases, as avoiding harmful substances can reduce certain preventable health risks and support long-term well-being.
Beyond medical assistance, every expression of kindness, encouragement and solidarity can make a difference to individuals and families navigating difficult circumstances. Together, accessible healthcare, preventive awareness, healthier choices and compassion can help build a more supportive society.
A Healthier Tomorrow Begins Today
“A timely check-up and a healthier choice can make a meaningful difference.”
National Cancer Awareness Day reminds us that building a healthier society requires awareness, informed choices and collective responsibility. Avoiding established risk factors, following appropriate medical guidance and seeking timely healthcare are important steps towards reducing preventable risks.
A healthier future begins when awareness translates into everyday action. By making informed choices, encouraging healthier habits and standing beside those affected by cancer, individuals and communities can contribute towards a more health-conscious and compassionate world.
